Jai Arrow: Why rugby league changed its rules for a player with MND \u2013 \u2018I\u2019ll fight till the death\u2019<\/p>\n

The ovation consumed Allianz Stadium as Jai Arrow emerged from the tunnel and led out his South Sydney Rabbitohs team-mates, holding back the tears he knew were bound to come.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For game 99, it was to the soundtrack of \u201cYou\u2019ll Never Walk Alone\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This time for his 100th appearance for the club? \u201cStand By Me\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Self-consciously holding his arms and flanked by long-time team-mate Cam Murray, Arrow took hugs from his colleagues, absorbed the spectacle and finally offered a thumbs up to all four sides that might be the most understated gesture the sport has ever seen.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The 31-year-old was marking his 100th appearance for the National Rugby League (NRL) side in Sydney against their arch rivals, Sydney Roosters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Arrow was named Player of the Season in 2025 at a club famously supported and part-owned by actor Russell Crowe. Becoming the club\u2019s 67th player to reach a century felt inevitable.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yet, in May, Arrow announced his immediate retirement from the sport following a diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Three months later, club officials received special dispensation from the NRL for the second-row \u2014 sat on 98 appearances \u2014 to suit up and start their final two matches of this season, before being subbed off after the opening whistle in a pre-approved change.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Appearance 99 came in the Rabbitohs\u2019 42-22 win at Gold Coast Titans last weekend. On Friday night, the century arrived in front of a near sell-out 45,000 crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say my relationship with rugby has changed much at all,\u201d Arrow told The Athletic. \u201cThis game has given me so much and I am so appreciative of what it\u2019s done for me. It\u2019s all I\u2019ve ever wanted to do and I got to live out my dream for 10 years.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAll that\u2019s changed is it feels like I\u2019m in a forever rehab and I understand that I won\u2019t ever play again. I\u2019ve come to terms with my diagnosis \u2014 it is what it is. I do not fear what is meant to come down the track. I\u2019ll fight till the death.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arrow is a household name across Australia, winning 12 caps for Queensland in the State of Origin representative series against New South Wales that often brings the country to a standstill every year.<\/p>\n

It helps that he has played a sport beloved by the country and, since his diagnosis, there have been a handful of events to celebrate his career and raise awareness and support for those affected by MND.<\/p>\n

Also known as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), MND is a progressive neurological condition that damages the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, which have the job of telling your muscles what to do.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Difficulty with speech is among the early symptoms, and a reason why Arrow and the Rabbitohs asked The Athletic to conduct a written interview.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

MND Australia states that while life expectancy following an MND diagnosis varies significantly, it averages two to three years. There is currently no cure.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Game 99 at Gold Coast provided a good rehearsal for Arrow\u2019s big night in Sydney, but brought humour through the tears.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett, a legendary figure in the game and not known to smile often, was among the staff drafted in to help dress Arrow for the occasion \u2014 much to Arrow\u2019s own amusement.<\/p>\n

Then, as the No 23 walked out to rapturous applause at the Titans\u2019 Cbus Super Stadium, tears welling in his eyes, it was team-mate Cody Walker this time escorting Arrow and making sure he lightened the mood with a word in his ear.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI said to Cody before the game, \u2018I\u2019m gonna need you to spray me and abuse me to help\u2019, and he did just that. It was along the lines of, \u2018Don\u2019t you f***ing cry, you dope\u2019,\u201d said Arrow.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWayne did help (with the socks) and I saw the funny side to it. I was so appreciative of what he and (club stalwart) Jason Clark did. It\u2019s weird to think I\u2019m a grown man and I need people to help put my socks on.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThis club and its people mean so much to me, and I\u2019m forever in debt to them. Wayne has been unreal throughout. He\u2019s allowed me to do what I need mentally and physically, and the club has been so understanding. They\u2019ve allowed me to live a normal life and it\u2019s the only place I can go and feel a sense of normality.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was definitely a different feeling (walking out). I was unsure how the crowd was going to be. I was unsure on how I was going to be. But it genuinely was so special, it was hard to describe. What stuck out was how loud they were. I was genuinely in shock. I just couldn\u2019t believe the amount of support. It really will be a memory I\u2019ll have for the rest of my life and I\u2019m truly grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There is little hiding from rugby\u2019s complicated relationships that have needed to weave around MND.<\/p>\n

Arrow calls the NRL\u2019s support \u201cincredible\u201d to allow him to reach 100 appearances, believing it was a joke when the idea was first presented to him by Bennett.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The support of his team-mates in seeing one of their own \u2014 and in his prime \u2014 having to deal with MND so swiftly, alongside his partner Berina and one-year-old daughter Ayla Rae, has struck him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely affected everyone in different ways but, from the start, I said to my team-mates I don\u2019t need sadness,\u201d said Arrow. \u201cI don\u2019t need sympathy. I just need your support and for you to treat me no different to how it was before, and let me tell you it has not changed.<\/p>\n

With his playing career celebrated in Sydney, more of the focus will shift to a life living with MND.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Arrow\u2019s path has been trodden by others across both rugby codes. In union, from Scotland and British Lion Doddie Weir, to former Leeds Rhinos rugby league star Rob Burrow, whose diagnosis inspired former team-mate Kevin Sinfield to begin an awareness campaign that has since raised more than \u00a311million ($14.9m) towards MND research and support.<\/p>\n\n
