When he was at the centre of the US counterculture, he lived in terror of his bandmate. Yet after the singer\u2019s death, he fought ferociously to protect his legacy. But, he says, he still regrets not calling out Morrison on his abusive relationships with women<\/p>\n

It took the Doors\u2019 drummer, John Densmore, three years to visit the grave of his bandmate Jim Morrison after he was found dead in a Paris bathtub in 1971. He didn\u2019t even go to the funeral. \u201cDid I hate Jim?\u201d Densmore pauses, although he is not obviously alarmed by the question. \u201cNo. I hated his self-destruction \u2026 He was a kamikaze who went out at 27 \u2013 what can I say?\u201d<\/p>\n

Quite a lot, it transpires. Morrison was a man who was spectacularly good at being a rock star \u2013 a lithe figure in leather trousers, prophesying about death, sex and magic on some of the biggest hits of the 1960s \u2013 Light My Fire, Break on Through and Hello, I Love You. But he was catastrophically bad at the rest of life. Like many alcoholics, he could be reckless, selfish and mercurial. \u201cThe Dionysian madman,\u201d Densmore has called him \u2013 a \u201cpsychopath\u201d, a \u201clunatic\u201d and \u201cthe voice that struck terror in me\u201d. He had lobbied to get Morrison off the road before his death, and even quit the band at one point. \u201cSome people wanted to keep shovelling coal in the engine and I was like: \u2018Wait a minute. So what if we have one less album? Maybe he\u2019ll live?\u2019\u201d Why did he carry on? \u201cBecause I wasn\u2019t mature enough to say that at the time. I wasn\u2019t trying to enable him. It was another era. I used to answer the question: \u2018If Jim was around today, would he be clean and sober?\u2019 with a \u2018no\u2019. Kamikaze drunk. Now I\u2019ve changed my mind. Of course he would be sober. Why wouldn\u2019t he be? He was smart.<\/p>\n\n
