while the Minnesota Vikings were trying to pair a veteran quarterback with JJ McCarthy before summer workouts, there was a lot of chatter over what caliber of quarterback they could bring in.
Sure, competent NFL quarterbacks do not grow on trees. That was the first obstacle.
But there were also reports that surfaced from insiders at the time — both locally and nationally — that made you wonder just how willing McCarthy would be to move over for someone who would clearly slot ahead of him on the depth chart.
These rumors got loudest when talks between the Vikings and Aaron Rodgers were getting somewhat serious. Eventually, Minnesota decided to trade for Sam Howell, essentially crowning McCarthy as the starting QB without any sort of realistic competition during camp
This spring, the Vikings went the opposite direction by signing arguably the best free agent quarterback on the market, without any hesitation. Still, questions remained over how JJ McCarthy would handle the fallout from his QB competition against Murray, should he lose.

That’s why, when Kyler was named the starter on Tuesday, those same questions surrounding McCarthy’s future only grew louder. In fact, as recently as Wednesday morning on Get Up (ESPN), Schefter was wondering out loud if his fellow Michigan alumni would want to stick around after losing the QB battle.
This afternoon, we got to hear from JJ McCarthy himself. While he’s clearly not happy about the outcome from his competition vs Kyler Murray, he made it very clear that he wants to stay in Minnesota and is focused on being a good teammate, going forward.
