Coventry City Make Late Move for Nice Defender Melvin Bard
Coventry City have reportedly identified OGC Nice left-back Melvin Bard as one of their leading targets as the newly promoted Premier League side look to strengthen their squad at the end of the summer transfer window.
According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Coventry have shown serious interest in the 25-year-old defender, with another foreign club also understood to be monitoring his situation. The identity of that second club has not been disclosed. The reports come as Premier League clubs race against the clock to complete their final pieces of business before the transfer window closes.
Bard’s versatility is believed to be one of the major attractions for Coventry. Primarily a left-back, the Frenchman is capable of operating in different defensive roles, giving a manager greater tactical flexibility. For a Coventry side preparing for the demands of Premier League football, that adaptability could prove particularly valuable over the course of a long and physically demanding season.
The Sky Blues are understood to be looking for further defensive reinforcements after securing promotion to the Premier League. Manager Frank Lampard has already overseen significant recruitment during the summer, but the club have continued to explore opportunities in the final days of the window.
Coventry’s interest in Bard comes despite the defender remaining under contract with Nice until 2028. Reports indicate that the French club are not under pressure to sell and would demand a substantial fee before considering his departure. Bard has been an important player for Nice since arriving from Olympique Lyonnais in 2021. Nice confirmed an agreement in principle with Lyon for his transfer in July 2021, with Bard subsequently making the move to the Côte d’Azur club.
The defender had already progressed through Lyon’s academy before making his senior breakthrough. His development at one of France’s leading clubs helped establish him as a promising young full-back, while his performances at Nice have since transformed him into an experienced member of the squad.
Since joining Nice, Bard has established himself as a regular presence in the team’s defence. He has also gained experience at international youth level, including with France’s under-21 side and the Olympic team.
His importance to Nice was particularly evident last season. Bard made 44 appearances across all competitions and was entrusted with the captain’s armband on several occasions, underlining the level of responsibility he has earned within the squad.
For Coventry, signing a player with that level of Ligue 1 experience would represent a significant addition. Bard would bring defensive experience, physicality and the ability to contribute from the left side of the pitch, while his familiarity with high-level European football could help him adapt to the Premier League.
There is also an interesting subplot surrounding Nice’s potential response to the situation. Reports indicate that the French club had an agreement in place for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Niels Nkounkou as a possible replacement for Bard. However, Celtic have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign Nkounkou, potentially complicating Nice’s plans should Bard leave.
The situation therefore remains fluid, with Coventry needing to convince Nice to part with one of their established defenders while also competing with interest from other clubs.
For Coventry supporters, Bard’s potential arrival would represent an ambitious move as the club prepare for life in the Premier League. The Sky Blues have already invested heavily in strengthening their squad, and adding an experienced French full-back could provide another important layer of quality and depth.
