Vikings make first QB move as the dominoes begin to fall

There were four NFL teams that kept four QBs on their initial 53-man roster on Sunday. The Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Minnesota Vikings. The Cleveland Browns also kept four, but quickly placed Dillon Gabriel on Injured Reserve, so he didn’t count toward the roster.

Having four QBs on a 53-man roster is unheard of, especially when only one typically plays. Most teams will have two, or three for an emergency situation, and there were bound to be moves to be made following Sunday’s cutdown day.

J.J. McCarthy was the talk of the weekend. The former Michigan signal-caller was apparently on the chopping block, if you listened to the media. But Sunday ended with the former first-round pick on the Vikings’ roster.

On Monday, the Vikings made their first move by cutting Max Brosmer.

The former Minnesota Gopher was an undrafted free agent last season, but the Vikings were impressed with how he performed in the preseason. With injuries to both J.J. McCarthy and Carson Wentz in 2025, Brosmer would appear in seven games and start two of them for the Vikings.

Brosmer ended the 2025 season throwing for 328 yards and four interceptions.

Vikings’ current QB room

With Brosmer being waived, the Vikings are now down to three QBs. Kyler Murray will enter 2026 as the starter, and Minnesota will also have both Wentz and McCarthy on its active roster.

The main question is still McCarthy, who had to sit the Vikings’ final preseason game with an injured ankle. If McCarthy’s ankle is worse than what some might’ve thought, it’s possible Minnesota places him on the IR and has both Murray and Wentz on the active roster.

But as of now, McCarthy remains on the Vikings’ 53-man roster.
