U2’s 50th anniversary is being commemorated on official Irish currency, with the Central Bank of Ireland preparing a special €2 coin celebrating one of the country’s most internationally successful bands. The commemorative coin will be issued in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof Quality editions beginning September 25, turning the band’s five-decade milestone into an official piece of Irish legal tender.
The coin’s design has yet to be revealed, with further details expected before it goes on sale. Collector coins and sets will be available directly through the Central Bank of Ireland, giving U2 fans and numismatists an opportunity to add the anniversary piece to their collections.
The Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof editions will offer two different finishes. Brilliant Uncirculated coins are produced with specially prepared dies and polished blanks, resulting in sharper details and a brilliant finish compared with ordinary circulating money. Proof coins receive an even more elaborate treatment, using polished dies and blanks and being struck at least twice to produce their distinctive mirror-like appearance.
The Central Bank regularly uses commemorative legal tender to recognize Irish heritage, historic milestones and cultural figures, and few Irish bands have had a global footprint comparable to U2. The group’s story began in Dublin in 1976, making 2026 its 50th anniversary year and giving the coin a particularly fitting place among Ireland’s cultural commemorations.
The honour also arrives during an unusually active period for the band. U2 have released more than a dozen songs over the past year while working toward their first new album in nine years. “Street of Dreams” became the first song from the still-untitled project this summer, following the ‘Easter Lily’ and ‘Days of Ash’ EPs released earlier in the year.
Their recent output has also included “Fireflies,” a collaboration with Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix. U2 contributed a new interpretation of Shane MacGowan’s “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” to ’20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan’, a tribute album scheduled for November 13.
That combination of anniversary celebrations and new music makes 2026 more than a retrospective year for U2. Five decades after the group formed, the band remains creatively active while its place in Irish cultural history is being recognized in a particularly permanent form.
There is something wonderfully appropriate about putting U2 on an Irish coin. The band’s music has carried the sound and identity of Ireland around the world for 50 years, and the Central Bank’s commemorative €2 release brings that story back home in an object designed to last long beyond the anniversary itself.
