The Central Bank of Ireland is set to honor two major figures in Irish culture—rock band U2 and bestselling author Maeve Binchy—with new commemorative coins this autumn. The releases are part of Ireland’s ongoing programme celebrating people and events of national and cultural significance.
U2 will be featured on a special €2 commemorative coin, marking 50 years since the band formed in Dublin in 1976. The coin is scheduled to be unveiled on September 25, 2026. The Central Bank said the tribute recognizes the group’s enduring influence, with its music and spectacular live performances inspiring generations of fans around the world.
