Justin Holbrook has outlined his vision for the future of the Newcastle Knights as he continues to shape the club’s next chapter. The former Knights halfback returned to Newcastle as head coach on a three-year deal, bringing more than two decades of coaching experience and a strong personal connection to the club.
Holbrook’s appointment followed a difficult 2025 campaign for Newcastle, with the Knights finishing with the wooden spoon and struggling offensively. His immediate task is to rebuild confidence, establish stronger standards and develop a team capable of competing consistently in the NRL.
A major part of Holbrook’s plans is getting the best from the players already at the club while integrating key recruits. Dylan Brown’s arrival was identified as one of the major priorities for the new coach, with expectations surrounding the star playmaker’s role in Newcastle’s attacking structure.
Holbrook also brings experience from St Helens, Gold Coast, Papua New Guinea and his recent role as an assistant at the Sydney Roosters. His return gives him an opportunity to combine that experience with his knowledge of Newcastle and its rugby league culture.
The Knights’ future under Holbrook will ultimately be shaped by player development, consistency, defensive improvement and the club’s ability to build a sustainable winning culture.
