The HBO TV series will document the making of the record, which is currently unnamed.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has described it as “a love letter to the history of American music”.
The new album, which is set for release in November, will be the follow-up to 2011’s Wasting Light.
Grohl, who was previously the drummer in Nirvana, has taken on the role as director of the new Foo Fighters project, following last year’s Sound City documentary.
One of the tracks from the film, Cut Me Some Slack, which was written by Grohl and Sir Paul McCartney, picked up best rock song at the Grammy Awards.
Each of the eight episodes in the Foo Fighters’ HBO series will follow the band to the US cities where they wrote and recorded the album.
In each location, they visited a renowned studio to record a track for the album.
Each track features local musicians, with the lyrics for each song being written on the last day of the session to allow the experiences and personalities of each location to influence the album.
Speaking to BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe earlier this year, Dave Grohl said that the upcoming Foo Fighters album will be “awesome”.
The frontman said: “We recorded something the other day that’s unlike anything we’ve ever done and it starts with a fuse and then it explodes.”
He gave no indication about when it would be released but said it would be “great”.
